Spend more than a few minutes on Tumblr and it''s easy to sucked into and then promptly lost in the vortex of reblogged GIFs and endless pop culture references. But in amongst the looping shock and awe expressions of Taylor Swift and Twilight, there are some true gems to be found.

Like the work of French animator Nicolas Monterrat and his series 'Un gif dans ta gueule' (A GIF in The Mouth) which sees him adding his own unique sense of humour and absurdity to all manner of vintage and historical photographs. Some are funny, some are surreal and others are just downright bizarre - yet they're all sure to entertain.
